The Strand Arcade is Sydney's epicentre of style and design. Named after London's smartest shopping street in the mid nineteenth century, the Strand Arcade houses many of Australia's best designer labels, jewellers, places to eat, coffee shops, unique gift shops and beauty salons. Opening in 1892, the Strand Arcade was the last of the arcades built in Victorian Sydney, and it is the only one remaining today in its original form. Originally constructed during 1891 in the Classic Revival Style, the Arcade is an important heritage landmark within Sydney, being the only remaining Arcade from the late nineteenth-century. The Strand has always been occupied by artisans, couturiers, milliners, glove and shoe-makers. The basement was the home of Sydney's first ballroom-nightclub, Ambassadors. The Strand almost burnt to the ground in 1976, where the majority of the George Street end of the property was damaged. The decision of whether to demolish the building or restore it was finely balanced. The reconstruction work carried out brought the building closer to its original condition as prior to the fire little money had been spent on the property for many years. The Strand Arcade was purchased by Ipoh in 1999. Progressive capital works projects have been undertaken in recent times to restore the property to its former glory. Today the building displays the charm and elegance of a bygone era whilst providing an alluring and sophisticated collection of retailers for the contemporary fashion shopper. The Strand Arcade is a Victorian-style shopping arcade in Sydney, New South Wales. The Strand Arcade is located in the heart of the Sydney central business district, between Pitt Street Mall and George Street. The arcade was one of the first Victorian buildings in Sydney. Being three storeys high, the arcade has the traditional-styled protruding galleries, cedar staircases, tiled floors, cast iron balusters and timber framed shop fronts, under a prominent, tinted glass roof to reduce glare. The arcade contains the preliminary boutiques that characterized the Sydney shopping experience of the 1890s. When the arcade opened in 1892, it was said to be the very latest in shopping centre designs and was described as, "The finest public thoroughfare in the Australian colonies". The arcade has endured two depressions, two World Wars and two major fires. The restored shop fronts are an exact replica of the original internal shopping facades. Designed by English architect John Spencer, The Strand was built in 1891 and opened on 1 April 1892, as the fifth and last of the arcades built in Sydney in the Victorian era. It is the only one remaining in its original form today. The arcade was to be 340 feet (or 104 metres) long, and three storeys high. The Arcade was originally known as the 'City Arcade' and sometimes as 'Arcade Street'. In 1891 it was named after the famous London Street that links the City of London and the City of Westminster. The arcade became run down as time went by. Restoration work was carried out in the 1970s, but a fire broke out on the morning of 25 May 1976. The arcade was partly destroyed. The Nut Shop, which still operates today, opened in 1939. The owner was Karl Mendels who had recently arrived in Australia after fleeing Europe with his young family to escape Nazi persecution. Mr Mendels rationed his popular sugared almonds during the war years. "The shop would only open for a few hours in the afternoon and we would sell a quarter of a pound to each customer, unless they were in uniform, then they were allowed to buy half a pound," according to his son Paul, who still runs the family business.
