After being advised of these falls are the tallest in Tasmania, we had to see them for ourselves, we drove 37 km north of St Helens, on a good but windy road, easy to find. The falls are at the end of a 600m walk from the car park, the path is excellent, as you approach the falls you are walking in the middle of a fantastic rainforest with the tallest tree ferns I've seen. The whole Pyengana area is beautiful and to top it off the waterfalls are lovely. The falls are worth the walk and the forest on the way is wonderful too. Even saw trout swimming in the creeks. These are pretty waterfalls, splitting nicely down the cliff face and with good water volumes even when there hasn’t been much rain. I imagine they would be spectacular after heavy falls. The track from the carpark to the falls is well maintained but is a steady climb back from the base of the falls to the carpark. George and Margaret Cotton settled here in 1875 with their 9 children, naming their property St Columba after a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who preached Christianity among the Picts. The waterfall can be seen from the road as you drive in but getting up close is spectacular! It is an easy short walk for the kids through a magical forest and if you keep a keen lookout in the streams you might be lucky enough to spot a platypus - we did and it was so special! From the carpark area, the trail gently descends to the Falls through breathtaking rainforest ferns. South George River is then crossed via a bridge and skirted briefly before the viewing platform is met. The area was prime habitat for Tasmanian Tigers, once Australia's largest carnivorous marsupial, and long presumed extinct. The locals, however, will have you believe they're still around, with dozens of reported sightings every year. More likely, keep your eyes peeled for the elusive platypuses that burrow along the banks of the reserve's creeks.
